In this irt-tour article it says that Missing the San Diego Open Racquetball Championships might give rise for other top contenders, including #2 Rocky Carson to take the title. That might be enough to push Carson to the top ranking on the tour..

Is it possible that by winning this event Rocky can become #1? Or am I reading it wrong?

Thanks.

Here's my analysis:

Looking at the current IRT rankings:
(as of 2/22/12)
Kane has a 1005 point advantage over Rocky in ranking points, so
in order for Rocky to take the top spot, he'll have to gain 1005 points over Kane in this tourny.
I don't think that is possible.

At the end of this tourny, the points from last year's San Diego event will drop off both player's totals.
Last year in San Diego, Kane defeated Rocky in the finals in 5 games.
This gives Rocky a net gain of only 75 points (390 drop off Kane and 315 drop of Rocky)
If Rocky wins this year's SD tourny, he'll gain an additional 390 points over Kane, which is not enough for
Rocky to overtake Kane in Ranking points (12 month rolling calendar).

It will however put Rocky in the lead for Season points, which means Kane will have to come back strong to ensure he keeps his #1 ranking as the rest of the season progresses.

including #2 Rocky Carson to take the title.

I thought this was just refering to winning the tournament title.
Kane wins basically everything for the last three years and someone else would be #1? Imagine the size of the asterisk next to that "title".

Come on, thats just senseless. The #1 title is determined by points earned throughout the season. Whether or not Rocky ever beats Kane in a straight up game, if Kane doesn't come back this season, Rocky was the better man throughout the season, and would deserve the title.

I know we are all Kane fanboys here (he is definitely the man) but lets keep our pants on, sheesh.

Guys,

You are using the 12 month ranking, not the year to date ranking.

Year to date, which is really all that matters, tells a different story. After the San Diego event, we will publish a more comprehensive account of the ranking implications, but if my math is correct, if Rocky wins the San Diego Open, he will be roughly 20 points behind Kane. That means he has to outperform Kane from that point on by 1 round in order to acquire the #1 ranking.

I know that this is somehow incorrect, but this is how I look at it:
Except for his loss to Alvaro in '09, Kane's won every single tournament since he came back from the suspension. I assumed that every single tournament adds points to his total.

If that's not the case, how does it work? During the 2010 season he won every single tournament he played in. How does that translate to the start of the '11 season?

Thanks for your reply.

So at the beginning of the season everyone begins with 0 points?

No. Think of it as a 12 month rolling point total. If they play in a tournament January 10th 2011 when that tournament rolls around in 2012 the 2011 scores will roll off\be replaced. It is more complicated then that but it starts there.

Yes, and no :)

Don't you love that answer?

For seeding purposes, we use a 12 month rolling calendar. For ranking purposes, we use the "year to date" number, which drops a certain number of events at year's end in order to crown each player with their appropriate ranking after Nationals.
