Has anyone else used a electronic pedometer while playing racquetball? I used one last week and logged about 1.5 miles for a 15 point doubles game. Used formula of 3000 steps for 1.5 miles.

I played around with one a few years ago - I seem to recall similar numbers. We played for 2-3 hrs, maybe 6-8k steps, 3-4 miles...?

Pedometers generally have to be calibrated based on the user's stride length during walking. Measure out a set distance and measure the number of strides to the target. There is no way this is going to translate with any real accuracy to the racquetball court where a mini step, side shuffle, sprint, and lunge may not even register with the pedometer. It sounds fun but I wouldn't put a lot of trust in its accuracy.

I recall one frequent poster from this forum would use a pedometer to challenge himself to see how few steps he could take and still win the game. Interesting idea when playing players of a lesser ability.

Yes, actual mileage/distance calc would be off - but each step (essentially every direction change) is picked up and interesting to count/track. Say, step count/hr...

I'd be more impressed if someone used one of those measuring wheels in a match:

Most of the pedometers thrive on a regular gait, and quickly lose accuracy on more irregular motions. Should still be useful of relative comparison.

I would imagine with the accuracy of GPS getting tigher and tigher that some day we'll see one that uses GPS positioning and calculates distances as it changes.

I'm totally going to integrate that with my HUD that provides the current score, ball speed and rangefinder, along with real-time shot suggestions based on my opponents position, trajectory, and tendency of movement stats from my hack on HIS GPS.

I'm not sure if you are referring to an accelerometer ... those are microchip based and can measure movement front to back, side to side, up and down, etc. I used to use one 5-6 yrs ago to show players how much more work I would do vs them ... kinda get a point across that I wasn't just naturally gifted :) Still have them at home (somewhere) ... thought about bringing them back out and doing a test with my daughter ... again to show that she needs to put in more effort.
Hey, don't get me wrong ... I'm a team player, so long as you can keep up.
Blu-Ray is coming ...
