After hearing Phil Knight's comments yesterday defending the actions of Joe Paterno I cleared out my closet of all Nike products and will not buy any more in the future

I didn't listen...but why?

I read some news story's and if anything he questioned if Joe had anything to do with covering up the scandal. What's so wrong with that?

"joe is my hero. every day for 12 of the last 12 years."

I wonder if the parents of any of the young boys involved in this terrible story feel that Paterno's actions were heroic

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard…..

The worst thing Joe did was not report what he was told directly to the police…Even the district attorney said he fulfilled his legal obligation to the fullest and he wasn't under any criminal investigation…. Basically Joe Paterno made a moral mistake..
BUT….
Your statement is to ban all Nike products….Good lord that's stupid. Phil Knight was the only speaker (there were 12 speakers total) who didn't have any association to either Penn State or the Paterno family who spoke up about how Joe was sacrificed because public opinion was not happy with how the investigation was being handled
And because of this your going to boycott a company…..STUPID.

Joe Paterno and donated over 4 million dollars to Penn State
He's the winningest coach in Div 1 football
He worked at Penn State for 61 years, 46 of them as the head football coach
1st college coach to be named "Sportsman of the Year" by Sports Illustrated
The 4 year graduation rate for Penn State football players is 78% (67% is Div 1 average)

I could go on and on but I don't see a need, you make it seem like he was the reason bad things happened but he was just 1 part of a system that failed…..
And out of everything that happened all you can think of is banning Nike products….
Enjoy wearing Puma's….I'm sure they will enjoy your business...

Don't be so hard on him. Paterno is only a rapist-enabling, bureaucracy-protecting, self-serving, morally-defective cretin who deserves to rot in hell for eternity.

I think it would be neat for the Giants to win but I believe Tom Brady is going to have one hell of a game.

First of all I didnt suggest a ban on Nike. Simply stated the company will no longer be receiving MY money. You are welcome to continue to support them. we each get to make that choice for ourselves.
No where in my comments did I blame Paterno for what happened at Penn State. Would not argue that he met his legal requirements. But also have to say that he did the absolute minimum in this situation that he could have without risking his own legal standing. In what I can only describe as a disgusting situation that was his contribution. Phil Knight wants to hold him up as a hero - thats his choice and based on your passionate reaponse i am guessing you agree. I have different expectations for heroes.

Phil Knight was speaking that day as the CEO of Nike and his words reflect his values and by extension the values of his company. He made the choice to back his long time business partner and friend. I made the choice to buy UnderArmour apparel - a reflection of values. You call that choice stupid - is that a reflection of yours?

jcohen..
You're statement pretty much reflects the general publics idea that you only really hear what you want to hear.
Did you actually listen to what Phil Knight said or did you just kind of listen?
He come out and even says
Joe Paterno should have done more BUT…..
So should the assistant coach for saw the act
So should the University once it was informed
So should the campus police once they found out what was going on.
"Whatever the details of the investigation are, this much is clear to me. There was a villain in this tragedy it lies in that investigation, not in Joe Paterno’s response to it"
Don't get me wrong, I truly feel this is a horrible thing that happened but more focus has been put on what Joe Paterno did (or didn't do) rather then on the person who actually committed the acts.
All Phil Knight stated was there was more then one person in this tragic circle, and focus should placed on that….

I guess you're also going to no longer watch NFL or College football since past and current players have made similar statements
I guess your no long going to use any form of the media since publications since some of them have stated this.

And here's a real twist..
I'm 99% sure Sandusky will be found guilty for his actions
BUT… that 1% is because in our society a person is innocent till proven guilty and what if but some small measure he's found not guilty what then..?

There are no BUTS. No matter what anybody else in the universe did, Joe Paterno was responsible for Joe Paterno. Weaseling by him or you can't change that.
