PRO KENNEX Show me the Backhand Shootout Troy High School - Sunday September 5 2010

Wow, what a day!!! I'm totally exhausted but I wanted to first thank EVERYONE who made the Mike Peters PRO KENNEX/EFX "Show me the backhand" shootout one of the biggest and best ever!! We had a total of 31 teams, 12 in the lower division and 19 in the upper!!! Amazing.
And there were some amazing backhands, including a 60 ft flat kill by Son Nguyen in the final, an over the shoulder high to low reverse corner pinch by Scott Davis (against us, unfortunately) and even a few butterfly backhand kills by Paul Delusional Dylewski against Clubber and Solis.
(you can pay me later Paul)
The day started early at 830 with 12 teams showing up for the lower division.
We went with 2 pools of 6 and then the top 2 from each pool going against the other in a semi final and final.
Rick Hollenback and Scott Greenburg were able to fend off the skills of Steve Cohen and Jackie Tilton in the first semi.
The other semi was Victor Rodriguez and Carlos Mercado v. David Grolman and Chris Lawson.
David and Chris pulled out a 15-8 victory to set up a final against Scott and Rick.
Scott and Rick were not to be denied as they took the final game for the victory in the lower division.
Congrats on a big win.

By this time, it was 11 am, and the marine layer that had been lingering was long gone and the sun was blazing. Jimbo had the ice cold lemonade set up and was just warming up his barbeque.
We ended up with 19 teams for the upper division and as you know, 19 is a prime number which is very difficult to divide by any whole number other than one or itself. Mathematically challenged, I used by teaching prowess to come up with the following plan:
Three pools, two with 6 teams and one with 7. We played games to 11, win by two, with the top 2 teams by total points from each pool moving on to the playoff. Two wild cards were also included in addition to that, based on their average, or mean score in the 5 or 6 games that they played. Obviously not for the algebra-challenged!
This would give 8 teams for a playoff to include quarters, semis and final.

Results:

Pool 1: Rocky Carson/Son Nguyen #1
Dale Valentine/Todd Entriken #2

Pool 2: Craig Lane/Greg Solis #1
Jesus Usterroz/Paul Dylewski #2

Pool 3: Andy Solis/Scott Davis #1
Mike Peters/Dawoud Gafarshdywyswoodshfargasky #2 (Sorry Dawoud)

Wildcards: Zeus Ocana/Brandon Davis
Bret Harnett/Rick Koll

Carson and Nguyen beat Harnett and Koll 15-7
Lane and Solis beat Davis and Ocana 15-8
Valentine and Entriken beat Usterroz and Dylewski 16-14
Davis and Solis beat Peters Dawoud 15-9
Semifinals:
Valentine and Entriken beat Lane and Solis 15-9
Carson and Nguyen beat Davis and Solis 15-7

This set up a very entertaining final between Rocky and Son v. Dale and Todd.
Dale and Todd are normally indoor players, but since losing to Jason Geis and I at Edison 11-1 in the pool play, they have come on like barn burners!!! (I had to get that one in there Dale!!!)
They won at Edison for their first outdoor shootout win and now had the tall order of playing the #1 outdoor player in the world in Rocky Carson and his partner was no slouch either, actually he's a tremendous slouch, also known as Son Nguyen...

The crowd definitely got their money worth as the game went back and forth with no big leads and just pounding the ball for 28 amazing points. Dale and Todd were able to pull off the stunner and take down the outdoor veterans 15-13 for their second shootout win in a row. I had joked with Dale earlier that I was going to bar him from any shootouts after they had beaten Jason and I in the semis of Edison, and I guess I should have followed up on my threat....but BIG PROPS to the boys from Riverside as they win this great PRO KENNEX event. As it turns out, Paul Dylewski and Jesus Usterroz scored the most points against the champions in the playoffs.
(again Paul, feel free to pay me gladly on Tuesday)

Thanks again to all who showed up and to all who helped me run my first shootout. I have a much greater appreciation for those people who put these things together and make them happen. Thanks to Mike Martinez from PRO KENNEX who supplied the prizes and also to Jim Banuelos and Robby Johnson from the PRO KENNEX team for their help and support.
To our commissioner Geoff Osberg for finding these courts, shooting his usual hi-def video, and getting this particular shootout in motion. And to Bobby Friedman for using my camera to get some great action and people shots which should be available for viewing very soon.

Make sure you demo the new Pro Kennex Kinetic KM700, it's an incredible stick with both touch AND power and while you're at it, slip on a white or orange Pure One glove, still the best glove on the market for feel and durability. And remember, any time you see the PRO KENNEX name on a shootout, you can be guaranteed of a fun and memorable day. Watch for the upcoming "Rib Throw-down" shootout with the date to be announced, and look for Kane Waselenchuk at the PRO KENNEX booth in Las Vegas in 3 weeks!!
That's the big Las Vegas-Stratosphere hotel World 3 Wall Ball Championship coming up Sept 23-26, DON'T MISS IT!!!

Thanks for listening and I am out......
