My company is relocating me to DC in April.

We're probably going to live in the Burke / West Springfield area or maybe Sterling.

So I'm assuming there's no outdoor action out there, but are there any club chains out there that have RB?

We have LA Fitness out here in Cali but there's only a few out there.

So where's the indoor action out there?

I play in Leesburg and Ashburn. Both have a fairly active group that plays pretty regularly and have drop in ngihts at each club. Monday 6-9 at Ashburn Village Sports Pavilion, and thursday night and sat morning at Ida Lee Rec Center in Leesburg. If you are closer to DC there is a nice club in crystal city/arlington area that hosts a lot of tournaments in the area including a WPRO stop at crystal gateway sport and health. Not sure how many regulars they have but its a nice club. I know Worldgate Health Club in Herndon has very competitive drop ins as well, you can't just walk in to those though, have to know or be a member. They have a higher number of higher level (A/Open) than the rest of the clubs.

Hope this helped...

Wouldn't you know it... I cancelled my LA Fitness membership and the moved to one of the only cities in Virginia that has an LA Fitness.

That's where I'm moving, Sterling.

Never mind...

Just went on the LA Fitness website and reinstated my membership. They're actually building more clubs out there. So there is the one in Sterling near my new house and 2 new ones in Arlington near my new classified work location.

So I played LA Fitness - Sterling VA last night. 2 games anyway.

Not exactly the 20+ A players you'd find on any given night in So Cal.

So where is the action in NOVA again?

there are a few A and higher level players out in Leesburg/Ashburn area. Not sure of the people who play at LA, never been there myself. I know that Worldgate in Herndon has an A/Open drop in wednesday nights that brings in a good group of players. But I'm pretty sure you need to know a member and its $20 to go as a guest I think, so not really cheap. I only moved into the area less than a year ago so not sure about anything more than that.

Yeah, I heard the name Worldgate the other night.

What's the deal with that price though?

That's like what it used to cost at the hottest indoor clubs in So Cal back in the day when RB was hot everywhere. It's not exactly hot here and it sure ain't gonna get any hotter at $20 a visit.

I'll look into it though.

Thanks

I think its mainly to get you to join the gym in order to play, which I think is in the ballpark of $80 a month but I have little to no grounds to back that up. I think they also limit how many times you can be a guest each year, but again I don't know about that but maybe someone else on here can give you more information. But most of the higher (mainly mid to high A level) level players I know just play amongst the 3-4 of us in the area wherever happens to be the most convenient court that night.

What about racquetball facilities in DC itself? I'll be staying just NW of the National Mall for a few days. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Yes, Worldgate Sport& Health has 4 courts, a good place to play. Usually the best players are there for challenge court on Wednesdays, and also unofficial self-arranged (and self-paid) challenge on weekend mornings. Yep, guest fee is I think $18 or $20 now. Steep, but not out of line for what plenty of other clubs charge these days for non-members. Go the s&h website for a 3 day free trial pass.

In downtown, NW DC, there's r'ball at the YMCA.

Other places in DC too probably but I haven't tried them. Handy to DC, and easy via Metro, are the Arlington (Kirkwood Rd) and Crystal Gateway branches of Sport&Health clubs, both with active racquetball and some great players.

Thanks very much. As it turns out, I just got back from DC to see your post. I should have checked while there. I did walk my legs off doing the tourist thing, so probably would not have had the energy to play as it turns out. Good to know for next time.
