(Just started getting email messages about updates to threads... the first one coming when I post to the thread)

Matt
Looks like a lot of changes going on here!

however, PMs seem to be down. Get error message below:

As a counterpoint to another thread...

I've always found it funny at tournaments to see the junior court-rats who jump on the courts to play any time a court appears to be vacant. These munchkins are the bane of the tournament director who is trying to keep a tournament on-track and get the real players on the courts... but hard to fault the kids' enthusiasm.

Anyone heard details on upcoming plans to televise racquetball?
(I'd heard Royster was involved in something new?)

Are post counts the # of times a user has posted? Is extra credit given for anything?

I've been wondering this for a while, and just saw what looks like a new user (mikeyb), who joined 9 hours ago, according to his profile. I see 2 posts from him, but it lists "13 posts" under his avatar (??)

Matt
I've seen a couple of player break strings on the portion of the string that routes around the outside of the frame. It looks like there isn't much protection from deep channels, and the string is exposed to wear if the racquet frame scrapes on the floor or wall.

I wanted to ask if any stringers or players have suggestions on ways to help protect the string -- would you just use head tape? -- or is there anything else that can be done during stringing -- maybe string selection or patterns?

thanks,
Matt

What tensions do players like with the 17g Ektelon Premier Power string?
Would you string it pretty similar to Tecnifibre 505, or tighter/looser?

thanks,
Matt
Is there anything in the new rules against players from alternating serves during their service?

i.e., partner A1 serves (and they win the rally), then partner A2 serves the next rally, then player A1 serves the 3rd rally...

There is a statement that "each player shall serve until there is a handout or sideout", but the only penalty provided for is if you serve again after previously losing the rally during your serve.

Matt
So one of the rules for doubles is that it is an "out serve" if a served ball hits the doubles partner while outside the doubles box.

I'm wondering when this would be called? Isn't it a fault for the server's partner to leave the box before the ball crosses the short line? So how would the server's partner get hit by the served ball when outside the service box without first incurring the fault that should stop play? long bounce off back wall?

Matt
What do people think of the new rules for 2011?
  • Doubles teams may serve in any order throughout the match
  • Open remains single serve (even as IRT returns to 2-serve)

Just finished restringing a racquet and realized that the head clamps weren't firmly in place, so the racquet wasn't really supported when drawing tension on the mains. I'm expecting this to result in a tighter string bed than planned. Any idea on how badly this affects things? (will try the racquet out later today just to see)

    Willie,
    what determines the post counts?
This doesn't seem to be a straight-forward count of user posts.

ie, Todd Boss (bfr7kq6) has over 7,000 posts
    as does 81artmonk
James Swift (JSwift79) is listed with 5,600 posts since joining last May (>30 posts/day?)
while ControlFreak is only at 5,000 posts and Jordan only at 9,000.

    thanks,
    Matt

Croft is diving a lot to stay in rallies, but Kane is inexorable.
Kane's first serve for match gives him a shot from 39' for the match. Buried. Match:
    11-4,11-1,11-3

    Only saw the last game.
Croft did get a bit of wiggle-room with drive serves to Kane's BH.
Kane's drive serves at least as effective.
I really don't see anyone getting an advantage over him because of the rule change on serves. Think any shakeup will be in other spots of the IRT rankings.

In yesterday's matches, John had likened Kane's play to the feeding of a boa constrictor. Seems apt.

At this time, Rocky's play is probably most comparable -- a varied arsenal of shots, hitting his balls pretty flat, and the ability to cut off a ball and put it down. But he is doing these things and just getting by his opponents. Kane is running over his, and his bearing is justifiably more confident. Would be great to see a well-rested Rocky in the zone stepping into the court tomorrow.

What string/tension do you guys like for restringing your gearbox racquets? Do you prefer a different gauge/tension than what you've used with previous racquets?

(just popped my first set of strings in a GB racquet today, so will need to decide what I want to restring at)

    thanks,
    Matt
    Anyone have this bag?
Where do you hang your wet gloves? (the gearbox website lists a "discreet cord to hang gloves", but it is definitely well-hidden)

And maybe a related issue: what is the metal ring on the strap used for?

There is an afternoon of sports contests coming up at school, pitting freshmen against sophomores, and juniors against seniors. For one hour, I'll have 4 racquetball courts and some number of freshman and sophomores and at the end, I'll need to declare a winner. Repeat the next hour with the juniors and seniors. I'm guessing most of these aspiring contestants will be recreational at best.

So... I'm looking for ideas on possible formats/contests. they should be flexible to the number of players who arrive that day (up to 20 per team), but I've got a fair bit of discretion otherwise.

Any ideas on what you'd do?

    Matt
Think it would be ideal to have the notifications box higher up (ie, above the "Latest Posts" box. I wasn't noticing it in its current location, so hadn't realized that I had received a PM 10 days ago.

Or is there an aggressive notification when a new PM arrives, similar to the old forum system?

    Matt
(am getting killed by the remapping of my emacs key bindings in this post editing interface)
Rules similar to the one that Q is winding down now, except I expect this to be harder.

It is called the "Zinnober Room" (it is legal to google "zinnober" if you want to know what it means)

So, starting off: "Music" is allowed, but an "Orchestra" is not.
