It was Friday night around 10:30. A hazy moon was lighting the Huntington Beach night sky.
I was reffing an Open Doubles match between Zeus/Lou Orosco and Jimbo/Andy Solis. It was the 2nd game and Lil Lou just launched Andy's deep "Z" serve off of the court for the second time in a row. Louie was very frusterated and Zeus was shouting at him to hit the next return as hard as you can. I was wondering if this was good advice. We were on court #1 and between serves a ball came bouncing into our court from court #3. I just heard Steve Cohen yell help as Louie in anger hit his ball backwards with a stiff forehand pop. I thought the ball would land out on the picknick tables 40 yards away. Instead it hit the side of the pole behind the court and ricosheyd over to court #3 straight into Steve's hand. He didn't even have to move his hand. Steve quickly thanked us. We told Louie what he did because he did not see where the ball went. We all paused the game shaking our heads and began laughing in utter amazement of the long odds we just witnessed.
What was your shot of the tournament?
The walls at our club are getting wet after a few games. I know that the air conditioning system is supposed to keep this from happening by pumping in cold "DRY" air but the club will not adjust it. Playing can get very dangerous and it is just not as fun when the ball screams around the court at mach II in completely new directions. I have seen many close calls when the racquet or player almost took someone out lunging after a wet bounce or slipping on the wet floor. This seems like a high insurance liability situation that the club would try to avoid. I hope no one gets hurt.
Does anyone else have this problem at their club?
