A bit disappointed to hear this:

Mike Augustin announced the retirement of Shane Vanderson.

"Shane Vanderson, currently ranked #8, announced that this season would be his last playing full-time on the IRT Professional Racquetball Tour. During a post-match interview with John Scott of the IRTNetwork, Vanderson (30), made the announcement by confirming an earlier Tweet where he hinted at retiring and by saying that he "had to grow-up sometime". Shane also said that he did not have any definite plans for his post-racquetball career. "

The spot begins with a cable subscriber who is on hold with a customer service representative at a call center. "When your cable company keeps you on hold, you get angry. When you get angry, you go blow off steam," the narrator says, as the subscriber is then shown playing racquetball. "When you go blow off steam, accidents happen," he says as the subscriber is hit in the eye by a racquetball cause he is not using eyewear. The ad continues with the subscriber being given an eye patch, and he is later challenged to a fight and seen running with his racquetball racquet. "When you get an eye patch, people think you're tough. When people think you're tough, people want to see how tough. When people want to see how tough, you wake up in a roadside ditch. Don't wake up in a roadside ditch. Get rid of cable and upgrade to DirecTV."

Funny commercial (not the eye jack part) with racquetball.

I appreciate them using racquetball and it's realistic....you can hurt your eye if you don't wear eyewear.

2011 December Garden City Pro Am

This pro am draw is stacked!

Like ALL EXCITING PLAYERS!!!!!

Wish I could be there for this one.

Any fantasy picks?

Alvaro would be my pick but having to beat Ben Croft to get into the finals is the challenge.

Juan Martinez and Jake Bredenbeck is a great match up then playing into Shane Vanderson starts the draws out with some serious matchups.

Javier Moreno rounding out the top 4 leaves one to wonder who will win this event?

All 4 of these guys are capable of beating each other. No sure fire wins in this one.

Have to say that I'm impressed by how trackable the ranking system is becoming.

I went looking at some profiles and was pleased to see how updated the results were.

Thank you USAR!

I agree...Kane is the best of all time.

http://www.irt-tour.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=227:what-makes-kane-great-1-11&catid=3:newsflash

With all due respect to the great champions of yesterday, I write this. Kane Waselenchuk is the best player ever. Many people have their fans, and their rationale, but
nobody in the history of the game has won 113 matches in a row. Why the arguing now over who was the greatest? Because of Kane, that’s why. By the way, if you want to see who was the greatest, watch one of his matches, live or online. Nobody has ever played this low to the floor since Steve Serot. Nobody has dominated the way Kane has. What makes this guy great?

1. Mental makeup - It has been written that champions forget their defeats. Kane forgets his wins. He takes everyone seriously and prepares meticulously. He is a smart player who can see weaknesses where others cannot. He has an ability to do the champion things of press conferences, interviews, and still show up to play well. He can game plan with the best and morph from a power game to control in a second.

2. Conditioning - With all due respect to the fitness guys who get the accolades, Kane quietly trains at home running hills and lifting weights with his trainer. He is as strong in game five as he is in game one and as strong on Sunday as he was on Thursday. People often do not consider this, but he plays more matches than anyone because he wins tournaments. While others rest with early upsets, he plays on.

3. Attitude - Kane is willing to share his success. He gives credit to his wife, Kim, his children, and his coach instead of being a me guy. At the US Open he is famous for sharing his success with friends from home in Edmonton, Canada, and his neighborhood in Texas. He thinks positively in terms of what he can do, and does not compare himself to others.

4. Family - He is a family man and a great husband to his wife, Kim and his two girls, Kennedy and Kendall. His days are spent training for racquetball and watching the girls and dogs. He and Kim are involved in Austin Pets Alive, a sanctuary for rescuing and adopting pets.

5. Thirst to improve - Kane is not satisfied where he is right now in racquetball. He knows he is at about 70 percent of where he could be. He strives to get better. He wants to know more about his craft.

6. Student of the game - He has respect for the champions who have gone before him. He respects the young kids coming up fighting to take his place. He studies the champions and loves to talk ball with any former champion.

7. Creativity - Shakespeare with a racquet was a term that I used to describe what he does on the court. Because Kane learned by himself, he learned to use his imagination to create shots. Often the crowd does not know how to react because they cannot believe the shot they just saw executed by Kane. Shots behind the back, over the shoulder, and between the legs are not done for show, they are executed for dough.

8. Power - Easily the hardest hitter in the game today, Kane seldom is thought of in those terms. He hits with power only when he has to, and usually uses controlled power during rallies.

9. Control - It can be argued Kane is the best control player ever. This author has seen him out ceiling ball players, some of whom are legendary for their own ceiling games. He can out lob the lobbers, and out dink the dinkers. Kane has changed the game with the introduction of the drop shot, a shot once thought to be outdated.

10. Coachable - Kane is extremely coachable. This does not mean the traditional coach-athlete relationship however. It means he wants another point of view, but is strong enough to make his own decision. True story and a glimpse into our world: at a tournament a few years ago against an athlete since retired, he asked me what serve at match point. I said the X serve will work. He agreed and he went on the court and hit a different serve, not an X serve. It was an ace and someone from the crowd yelled to me, “Nice call, Coach.” Yeah, right! Kane had felt the other serve would work as soon as he walked back on the court after the time out. His take was the X serve would have worked but he felt and correctly so, the Y serve was the one to use.

11. Adversity - This guy has had more comebacks than Rocky Balboa. As a youth, he left racquetball to play hockey and came back. He was forced out due to injury when he dove into a wall in Bolivia early in his career. He was suspended from playing racquetball for two years. Each time he came back with a vengeance. Nobody has handled the adversity and problems better than Kane has.

These are qualities of a champion. How long will this historic run last? Consider this: Since last February when everyone forecast Kane's demise when he was taken to a five-game thriller in San Diego, he has not lost a game. That is for Florida, Salt Lake City, St Louis, Tijuana, and Fullerton. That’s 20 matches played and not one game lost. After awhile, words like amazing aren’t enough to describe someone like this athlete and his accomplishments.

Photos by Jim Winterton, who coaches the number one male and female pros, Kane Waselenchuk and Rhonda Rajsich, and has worked with them for over eight years. He also coaches other athletes, such as three of the top four collegiate males in 2011, and four athletes on the WPRO besides Rhonda. Check out www.coachrball.com for more information about Jim's athletes and his online coaching programs.
Great Job Gigi and Andy!!!!

Here is what I love about this final.

This is a big test for Samantha.

It is clear by watching her that she has been training all summer.

The girl is moving quick and hitting hard.

Looks a bit more toned as well.

Rhonda lost one game on her way to the final...she is fresh and hasn't really been tested too much. Rhonda simply is fierce and she knows that she will have to play her best this season to stay ahead of Paola and Samantha. Those girls are training very hard to take Rhonda's spot.

New commissioner...new season....new live broadcasting network...level of play is up on the WPRO and the energy and enthusiasm is high. This season, I believe, may just be their most exciting ever. At least in the 15+ years I have followed and I have witnessed some great WPRO seasons!

Samantha's semi final gave an idea of what it will look like outside of the top 3 fighting for first...Kerri is not going to stand back and let the young guns take over. Kerri and Samantha were battling it like two warriors who were not going to give up. Game two was a see-saw battle that went back and forth and back and forth for like 45 minutes or so a total of 28 points were scored with Kerri winning 15-13! That was the most exciting women's match I have seen. Samantha was Superwoman flying all over the place. Kerri was like..."what you want to get that one...well get this one"....it was crazy awesome.

I can only imagine what Samantha and Rhonda are going to bring since they both are known to do everything under their skin to get the ball and keep it in play.

Man...can't miss this:

Norman Wilensky was a dedicated husband, father and friend to many, with his focus towards the needs of others. He carried his love of family and friends to his love of sports. He was a loyal person, and this attribute was evident in his commitment to racquetball. He enjoyed playing for over 30 years of his life. Norm played six days a week, and was never tired of the game. Every day was a new beginning, every game starting from a level playing field. Norm died suddenly at the age of 62. Norman Wilensky will never be forgotten, and his memory will carry on through young collegiate students who have strong values such as his.

With the help of friends in the racquetball community, The Norman Wilensky Scholarship Fund has been created to keep his memory alive. To qualify for the scholarship, which will be awarded to a student-athlete at the Intercollegiate National Racquetball

The selection criteria for the recipients will be based on the following attributes:
(1) The individual’s academic achievement;
(2) the individual’s racquetball accomplishments;
(3) the individual’s team spirit, dedication and loyalty;
(4) the individual’s conduct and values both on and off the racquetball court;

Ashaway, RI — Ashaway Racket Strings has introduced the newest member of its popular UltraKill® family of racquetball strings. New UltraKill 16 utilizes the same Zyex® core polymer as other members of the family, but in a special, multi-stranded monofilament construction that increases power and resilience. This Zyex construction allows UltraKill 16 to maintain tension throughout the life of the string for consistent performance, and the rugged 16 gauge (1.30 mm) thickness maximizes durability for chronic string breakers.

“UltraKill 16 is the workhorse in the family,” said Steve Crandall, Ashaway’s Vice President of Marketing. “It’s designed to provide exceptional power and ball control for amateur or professional players who hit the ball really hard and break a lot of strings. The Zyex core in UltraKill 16 minimizes tension loss for more consistent performance, and the braided surface maximizes control and increases spin.”

Testimony to UltraKill 16’s toughness, it has recently been adopted as the string of choice by racquetball great Jack Huczek. Jack, who advises Ashaway on product development and was an early play-tester for the UltraKill family, uses an UltraKill hybrid combination with the black, 16 gauge UltraKill for his mains and the green, 17 gauge for his crosses. “This combination gives me an excellent balance of power, resilience and control,” he said. “It maintains tension far longer than other strings, and I don’t break nearly as many strings!”

Gloss black in color, UltraKill 16 is available in 40 ft sets (12 m) and 360 ft reels (110 m). Because of the tension holding properties of Zyex, Ashaway recommends stringing UltraKill 16 up to a maximum of 35 lbs tension, or approximately 10-15% less than standard racquetball strings.

Ashaway Racket Strings are made by Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co., the only U.S. manufacturer of string for squash, tennis, racquetball, and badminton. Operated by the Crandall family since 1824, Ashaway has been making racquet strings since 1949, and is responsible for several important technical innovations. Ashaway is the Official String of USA Racquetball and the Women’s International Squash Players Association. Ashaway Line & Twine Mfg. Co. also makes braided products for medical and industrial applications. For more information visit www.ashawayusa.com

Kenny Green Jr. of Biloxi completed a good run this season, winning the Ektelon national singles championship in racquetball in May in Fullerton, Calif.

He won the men’s 24-and-under division.

Green defeated Joel Barshaw of Portland, Ore., in the finals.

In February, Green won his third straight state championship. He defeated Richard Mordachini in the title match and beat rival Bobby Jackson in the semifinals.

Green also won the 2011 USAR Regional singles qualifier in Lilburn, Ga., in the 24-25 age bracket in April. Green defeated Scott Humiston of Knoxville, Tenn., in the title match.

Going into the 2011-2012 Intercollegiate season we are working on a schedule for the year.

We are working on becoming an official conference.

Talks are still in the works.

Any schools in the Midwest want to be on the schedule please let me know.

We are looking for two more sanctioned events and any non-sanctioned tournaments to add as well.

So far we have Indiana State University - tentatively scheduled early September and WPRO Satellite event with collegiate divisions in Cincinnati last weekend in January.

Please let me know asap.

Last year we had two schools schedule events on the same weekend and we would like to avoid that.

Please get on the schedule as soon as possible.
