We're awaiting the release of the Women's Professional Racquetball Organization's (WPRO's) season ending rankings, but via Twitter it has been announced that Rhonda Rajsich finished the season as #1 ahead of Paola Longoria.

Here at The Racquetball Blog offices that announcement was met with a collective "what? Seriously?"

We're in disbelief here because it seems clear to us that Longoria had the better season. She won 5 WPRO events to Rajsich's 4, and Longoria was in the final of every event she entered. Rajsich had a very good year, but she did lose in the quarters of the Texas Open and the semis of the Puget Sound Challenge. Thus, Longoria made the finals 100% of the time while Rajsich did it 80% of the time.

The key seems to be that Longoria missed one event - that Puget Sound Challenge, which without Longoria there you'd have thought would be Rajsich's to win, but she didn't. Longoria's absence from the Puget Sound Challenge was for a good reason, as she was receiving a national sport award from the President of Mexico.

We can understand having your ranking system reward players for being at the tournaments, but to not finish #1 because you missed one event, when it seems clear you've got the best record, makes the system seem too harsh on player's who do miss events.

Alternative System

The Racquetball Blog tracks player's performances over the season and across seasons, and our internal ranking system gives players points according to the round that they lost in. For example, a quarter final loss mean 8 points, as there were 8 players alive in that round; a loss in the 32s means 32 points; a loss in the finals means 2 points; the winner gets 1 point.

Fewer points are better in this system, and you sum up the points across events and divide by the number of events to get a mean point total for each player.

Using this system, Longoria is #1 as she has 1.44 points, and Rajsich #2 with 2.40 points. Samantha Salas is 3rd with 4.70 points, and then Christie Huczek is 4th with 5.00 points.

Huczek being 4th highlights that this system doesn't favor people who play more tournaments, as Huczek played only four events, finishing in the semis three times and quarters once. Again, we understand that you want to have an incentive for players doing so. It wouldn't be good for an organization to have its year end #1 be a player who only came out to one event even if the player won that event. That would be case in this system.

So you have to be wary of small numbers of events in this system. Aimee Ruiz is 6th with this ranking system, but she was only in two events (making the quarter finals in each). (Note: four players were in all 10 WPRO events this season: Rajsich, Salas, Susana Acosta and Jennifer Saunders)

Understand that Rajsich and Longoria have been the dominant WPRO players over the last three seasons. Collectively, they have won 24 of 27 WPRO events with Longoria winning 14 and Rajsich 10, and the other three events going to Samantha Salas, Cheryl Gudinas, and Kristen Bellows.

Thus, Rajsich and Longoria are the class of the WPRO right now, but from The Racquetball Blog's perspective Longoria has the better record, including this season.

She should be #1.

Player A dives for player B's shot, gets the ball, and as player B is setting up to kill the next setup, steps in the pool of sweat player A left on the floor and either totally misses the ball or is otherwise unable to take his shot appropriately.

Player A has created a hazard on the court not unlike losing an article of clothing or piece of his equipment on the court, which prevents player B from taking his shot.

Can this fall under the loss of apparel penalty hinder or is this just a "yea that's not covered by the rules right now" situation?

Thanks
There are several WPRO matches this morning between 9am and noon, are you guys going to turn the stream on so we can catch some of that action?

Thanks

Thanks!

Wondering if anyone in possession of a Marty Hogan pro video (not the legends stuff) preferably from the early/mid 80's would mind digitizing and posting it, or in the alternative, sending me the video and I will digitize/post it and send it back to you.

Thanks

This video starts at 9-10 in the tiebreaker after a contentious and physical match with a lot of hinders and arguing.

As you can see in the video, Brian Fredenberg hits a pinch which is a little high and carries to the back right corner, Alex Ackermann is set up to hit it but Jansen Allen is pinned in the corner by Alex and the ball, and attempts to crouch out of the way of the ball but ends up more or less right in front of Alex. The referee called the penalty hinder, it was upheld by the line judges, but as you can see on the video, the spectators did not particularly agree.

Since you can see the whole play clearly on the video, what are your thoughts?

I'm pretty sure I got this clip from someone on these forums at some point, but I couldn't find it anymore so I thought I'd post it on youtube and post a link for you guys to enjoy too.

If you ever thought Kane hits the floor a lot compared to some pros.. think again! Cliff dove 5 times in one of these rallies.

Enjoy

Hey Jason, can you talk a little bit about the two new racquets coming from PK and what the differences are, which one you'll be choosing and why? I noticed you never used the KM racquet like Kane did this year (at least I didn't see it; I'll admit to not checking you at every tourney. :) ) why not?

Thanks for any insight.

The new Penn HD's made in China are CRAP. I played Shai Manzuri tonight and we broke 5 of them in 5 games to 11, plus they bounce funny (they seem to go down quickly after hitting the front wall and pop up like they are unbalanced or something) and don't sound "clean" when you hit the ball.

I got a can of the made in the USA pro penn HD's when I got home (about half my stock right now is China) and drove back to LA fitness to try one, and it plays clean. The 5 we broke were from 3 different cans because we bummed one off of another guy when we had broken all of ours.

Penn, if anybody at your company reads this board, fix your balls ASAP or you will lose the ball business.

Thanks

It's only the 2nd game and tiebreaker, but here are some links to the video I took at Texas State Singles. Marcelo won the 2nd game 15-9 and Patric won the tiebreaker 11-7. Patric also won the first game 15-6 or 7, although I don't have that one on video.

Do not attempt to adjust your monitor, the lighting on the courts really is that yellow..

MAKE SURE TO HIT THE "HQ" BUTTON! THIS WAS SHOT AND UPLOADED IN HD!

Obviously in clip 1, it's Jason and Sudsy.
Clip 2 - Sudsy and ?
Clip 3 - John Ellis (Pro Kennex guy?) and ?
Clip 4 - Cliff and Sudsy
Clip 5 - Cliff and ?
Clip 6 - Sudsy and Jason
Clip 7 - Ruben and Mike Guidry

Identify those guys in Clips 2, 3, and 5 for me!

Thanks All!
Surprised nobody is talking about this one.. Kane isn't there, but Jack, Rocky, Alvaro, Shane, Mitch. No Jason Mannino either.

No surprises in the draw however, Jack beat Alvaro in 3, Rocky beat Mitch in 4, those are the 2 semis.

is the draw.

I was refereeing the Open finals between Patric Mascorro and Shai Manzuri this weekend in Austin (both super nice guys by the way, easy job reffing), and I called one of Patric's serves short. He appealed and the line judges overruled me.

However, I happened to be videotaping the match in HD, and thought I'd show a screenshot of the serve in question. You can see the two line judges sitting to the sides of the court in the screen grab. Although it's difficult to tell the ball bounced before the line in the frame grab, it clearly bounced before the line in the video.

I'm uploading the video clip (about 5 seconds) to youtube to prove the case. :)
So I made this video, I'd love if you all could look at it and comment.

Make sure to click "watch in HD" since I filmed this with my new HD camcorder.

I'm the one in the white shirt.
If so, how do you do it? Do you take the grip off and shave the flare down or do you just live with the flare being in the palm of your hand? Right now I hold the racquet such that the flare is just below the bottom of my hand, and thought about how many pros old the racquet much lower, and when I just hold the racquet in my hand that way it's uncomfortable because of the flare.

I'm a mid-Open player and hit 145-155mph for what thats worth.
After Llacera got hit for like the 4th time full power by Huczek's forehands, he got pissed and hit Jack's racquet with his own.. this while Jack looked like he was trying to apologize! He then drops the ball, and raises his racquet like he was going to hit Jack with the ball, but thought better of it. Crazy stuff! Wonder why no technicals were issued..
And various other matches don't work, for example Vanderson/Huczek from last years Nationals. The video player opens but nothing plays, it just sits at the black screen. Other matches on the site work fine.

Love the site though, just wanted to make sure you knew!
Let me start off by saying, flat rollouts look a lot better in person than they do on TV. Secondly, Kane is the most ludicrously good player I've ever seen (in person), he hits the ball so flat and has such amazing court awareness and always has his eye on you.

I got to play him 2 games to 11 and although I only got 2 points in each, I feel he actually played me pretty hard (I am an amateur open player) and I did roll the few shots he gave me. His hitting power and accuracy are put next to his court quickness and swing quickness which you have to be on the court with him to believe. I hit pretty hard from my point of view (I'd estimate 150-ish?) on my forehand side full rip and I hit a crosscourt to his forehand about as hard as I could, and with a pretty decent angle on it and he got there, took a full swing, and rolled it on his forehand. You know how like when you get to wind up on a ball you get your arm back and take a full swing? He does that in about .01 seconds.. it's flat out ridiculous.

Huge thanks to Kane for coming out tonight and thanks to Leo for arranging the exhibition "matches".
